ORLANDO REWIND ⏪
Smith's Island and the Unlikely Tale of Lawnmower Innovation
In the heart of Lake Apopka lies Smith's Island, a 13-acre oasis with a tale as rich as its ecosystem.
Once a fisherman's paradise, the lake fell victim to pollution by 1970, although, is slowly recovering. The island's history stretches back centuries, evidenced by Native American artifacts found nearby.
Lucius Neal Smith, a Georgia-born visionary, purchased the island in 1934. His true claim to fame came in 1944 when he and his brother Alex invented the Whirler Glide, a revolutionary self-propelled lawnmower. Dubbed the "Snappin' Turtle," it became a sensation across the Southeast.
After Smith's passing, the Anthony family acquired the island in 1989. They transformed it into their home, complete with a herd of occasionally escaping American Bison.
Resisting development pressures, the Anthonys placed the island in a trust in 2006, ensuring it remains in the family for 360 years.
Today, Smith's Island (drone footage) stands as a living museum of Old Florida. The Anthonys, now in their seventies, continue to cherish their isolated paradise. Chris Anthony vows never to leave, even suggesting a dramatic aquatic funeral when his time comes.

THE SQUEEZE 🍊
The Green Guardian of Orlando
Reginald Burroughs, a passionate gardener from Parramore, is transforming Orlando and beyond through environmental activism. As a board member of IDEAS for Us, he cultivates change at Audubon Park Covenant Church and across the globe, from Miami to Liberia.
Burroughs believes in the therapeutic power of soil and its connection to community well-being. His journey from Jones High School graduate to international changemaker includes founding Black Bee Honey and spearheading youth entrepreneurship programs.
CEO Clayton Ferrara praises Burroughs' understanding of local actions' global impact. Through fleet farming, Burroughs turns lawns into productive gardens, fighting hunger and promoting sustainability.
His legacy grows with every seed planted, inspiring others to nurture a greener, kinder world.
Orange County's Fiery Tax Debate
Orange County leaders have ignited controversy by approving the first fire service tax hike in 17 years.
This $70 million boost aims to add 167 firefighters and four new stations, addressing Chief James Fitzgerald's concerns about competitive wages and equipment safety.
The average homeowner faces a $150 annual increase, with businesses bearing an even heavier burden. While most commissioners backed the plan, Mayra Uribe stood alone in opposition, criticizing the rushed process and lack of community input.
The county counters that discussions began months ago. As the debate smolders, two September hearings loom, offering a final chance for public input before the potential tax increase is sealed.
This fiscal concern highlights the delicate balance between public safety and financial prudence in Orange County.
