The Hammered Lamb
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Orlando. Last Thursday I included a poll in the story about the City of Orlando closing the parking garages at 11pm. 58.06% of those responding to the poll thought the garages should not close early. There was some very thoughtful reasoning in the poll comments, too. Thanks to all who participated.
In today’s issue: 👇
Orlando’s oldest park (not Eola)

The Hammered Lamb
….and much more, including an insane BOGO. 😀
🛑 Don’t forget to click (or tap) the poll at the bottom of this issue so we know if we’re on the right track. Every time you vote in a poll, our cat Luna gets a little treat. 🐈 😻

ORLANDO REWIND ⏪
Orlando’s Oldest Public Park Revitalized (Not Eola)
In downtown Orlando, Dickson Azalea Park wears the crown as the city's oldest public park, tracing its roots to a 1916 land purchase by State Senator Walter Rose. Initially a 5-acre parcel surrounding Fern Creek, this verdant escape evolved through community efforts to serve the Fern Creek neighborhood.
In 1924, Rose deeded the land to Orlando, laying the foundation for this cherished green space. But it was the 1930s renovation spearheaded by the Orlando Civitan Club that truly defined the park's identity.
Honoring pioneer businessman Henry H. Dickson, renowned for peddling azaleas door-to-door, they transformed it into "a natural and semi-tropical setting" showcasing thousands of vivid azaleas donated by residents.
This stunning floral display earned Dickson Azalea Park historic designation in 1991, making it Orlando's first such distinguished park.
A $1 million renovation in 1999 ushered in further enhancements, ensuring its contemporary relevance. Now nearing its centennial, the 3.6-acre urban retreat enchants with its annual azalea bloom, a spectacle that has drawn visitors for decades.
An embodiment of community spirit, perseverance, and nature's splendor, Dickson Azalea Park remains an evergreen enclave where Orlando's past and present dovetail, a blooming testament to the power of cultivating shared green spaces.

Nature's Resilient Jewel: The Remarkable Rebirth of Lake Apopka
In its prime, Lake Apopka lured anglers and nature lovers to its teeming waters and lush environs, boasting over 20 fish camps. But agricultural runoff triggered relentless algal blooms, obliterating sunlight and vegetation, reducing it to Florida's most polluted lake.
Undeterred, the St. Johns River Water Management District undertook an audacious revival. Years of phosphorus removal paid off as levels plunged 69% and clarity soared 97%.
Now, crews replant eelgrass and Vallisneria americana, once dominant vegetation spreading exponentially across the rejuvenated waters. For tireless advocates like Jim Peterson, witnessing the revival of this natural jewel validates decades of perseverance while offering hope that humanity can rectify its environmental transgressions through dedication and ecological resilience.

Reclaiming Pride in Orange County's Neighborhoods
In Orange County's Pine Hills community, an extraordinary revival is occurring thanks to Sandy Miller and the "People of Clarcona-Ocoee" group. Their efforts go beyond beautification; they aim to reignite residents' pride and strengthen community bonds.
Miller recalls taking over her own neighborhood's decline, setting the stage for broader impact.
On Powers Drive, they wash walls, trim trees, rake medians, and refresh fences - simple acts sparking collaboration as strangers become neighbors. Miller believes this camaraderie enhances security and belonging.
Their dedication earned Clarcona-Ocoee Road the 2023 "Corridor of the Year" award from Commissioner Christine Moore's "Corridor Chiefs" program.
As they transform neighborhoods, Miller's team spreads the powerful message that united communities can achieve the seemingly impossible.
Domu Dynasty Founders Chart a Flavorful New Course with Small Food Group
In an exciting culinary development, Sean "Sonny" Nguyen, the visionary behind the acclaimed Domu Dynasty restaurant group, has launched Small Food Group.
Inspired by his global travels, especially in Japan, this new venture promises an immersive dining adventure.
First up is Rion's Ocean Room, a casual seafood counter offering poke-by-the-pound and à la carte seafood snacks, named after Nguyen's firstborn.
Complementing it is Gyukatsu Rose, honoring traditional Japanese gyukatsu - seasoned beef cutlets fried then seared at mini stone grills table-side, with accompaniments like soup, rice, and dipping sauces.
Nguyen envisions each compact concept delivering big on flavor and experience. While locations remain undisclosed, these passion projects encapsulate his commitment to culinary boundaries.
The Fall 2024 openings mark an epicurean quest redefining local dining.
Energy-Saving Tech Boosts Second Harvest's Meal Output
In the battle against hunger in Central Florida, the Second Harvest Food Bank scored a pivotal victory with a $200,000 federal grant from Congressman Maxwell Frost.
The funds will finance a thermal energy storage system, reducing the nonprofit's monthly energy expenditure by an estimated 20% - a difference translating to 160,000 additional meals.
President and CEO Derrick Chubbs hailed the upgrade as game-changing for operational efficiency, allowing energy-draining freezers periods of downtime while maintaining safe temperatures via passive cooling modules.
With pandemic-elevated demand lingering, every resource conserved fortifies Second Harvest's capability to serve the region's food-insecure families.
The investment marks a crucial lifeline strengthening the organization's core mission - ensuring no Floridian goes hungry.
